1. Where do you work?  What is your role, and can you tell us a little bit about what you do?

I am the Program Director at Rhodes Grove Camp in south central PA.  Throughout the year, I plan and prepare our summer camp program that is offered to campers between grades 2-12.  During the school year I lead a leadership development program for high school students in the area where we study what it looks like to be a Christian leader and what we can do to improve our leadership skills.

2. How did Geneva's student ministry department prepare you for this position?

It taught me how to learn which is vital in an ever changing environment. It gave me confidence to lead where I felt underqualified (which is a lot of places).  And it gave me a better understanding of youth culture (this is another area that’s ever changing though).

3. What is your favorite part of the job so far?

My favorite thing to this point has been creating a community at camp.  Camp is a place where kids come to belong and while I love making that for my campers, I love doing it even more for my summer ministry team who serve with me all summer long. Having a strong community of believers is very important and camp is a solid place to create that.

4. What are some obstacles you have faced in your church or ministry?

My first summer was definitely difficult transitioning to a new place.  Not only was it different and new for me but I was different and new to all the previous summer workers and campers.  Change isn’t always easy and that first summer certainly wasn’t.

5. How do you see Christ using the place where you work to further the Kingdom?

Each  year we bring campers from all around the central pa and Maryland area to teach them either what it means to become a Christian and what this life entails or how to continue in their Christian walk.  Campers continue to come back to experience a life changing week and learn about all that Christ has done for them.  Each year we see some of our campers join our team for summers and we’ve seen our workers move up through college with hopes to work in ministry full time.  While camp is a place where some have their lives changed, it’s also a place where others start their dreams of helping change lives.

6. Any advice for our current student ministry students?

You may have already received this advice, but seriously!, read your min books.  If you don’t now, you’re just going to end up reading them later anyway so you might as well learn it ahead of time.  And don’t take lightly the call to ministry.  We have a huge privilege to ministry God’s word to the world and He warns that it’s not to be done half-heartedly in James 3.  Take your studies seriously so that you can later take you calling seriously because right now your calling is to be a passionate student!
